What Is Sensory Processing Disorder?

Sensory processing disorder occurs when the brain has difficulty processing signals and information the senses deliver. As a result, a person might become overly sensitive or not sensitive enough. The disorder often develops in childhood and is frequently connected to autism spectrum disorder and other developmental conditions.

What Are the Symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder?

The symptoms of sensory processing disorder typically fall into one of two categories. A person with sensory issues may overreact or underreact to stimuli. The symptoms vary by person but may include:

  • Clumsiness

  • Reaction to loud noises

  • Complaining about bright lights

  • Inability to wear clothing that's tight or itchy

  • A preference for strong pressure, such as tight hugs

  • A strong preference for certain types of food

  • Difficulty with proprioception, or being able to tell where their limbs are in space

Often, when a person has sensory processing disorder, their reaction to stimuli may seem extreme. For example, a person may vomit after seeing bright lights or hearing loud sounds. If touch is an issue, they may scream when someone tries to hug them.

While symptoms of sensory processing disorder most often appear in children, adults may experience them as well.

Chiropractic Care for Sensory Processing Disorder

Chiropractic care can help children and adults with sensory processing disorder experience relief from their symptoms. When the vertebrae are misaligned, the brain cannot receive the correct information to process stimuli. The disruption can affect a person's proprioception, or ability to detect where they are in space, and other senses. Without accurate information from the brain, a person can't regulate their senses.

During a chiropractic session, Dr. Lazar can correct vertebral subluxations, or misalignments, improving neurological processing.
