Meet QSM3 Specialist Chiropractor

Dr. Mark Chappell-Lakin

My route to becoming a chiropractor was not the traditional “I had an incredible experience and I
decided to do this for the rest of my life.” My route was more of a long and winding road.
In undergrad I loaded up on science classes because I found them to be fascinating. In the
back of my mind I was thinking that someday I might do medical school or physical therapy
school. I honestly didn’t know much about chiropractic at the time. I did know that I enjoyed
teaching and working with kids so I ended up pursuing, and receiving, my Bachelor’s degree in
Elementary Education.
I spent a few years teaching in a classroom before I decided to take my teaching outdoors and,
over the course of 7-8 years, work as a challenge course facilitator, a high school soccer coach,
a summer camp co-founder, and an environmental educator. It wasn’t until my second daughter
was about 2 years old that I realized I was so tired from taking care of other people’s kids that I
didn’t have the energy I wanted to play with my own kids. I had some neighbors at the time who
were a husband/wife chiropractic team and I got into some discussions with them about my
dilemma. I told them about my undergrad idea of med school, etc. and they asked me what I
knew about chiropractic. That conversation started me down the path to where I am today.
The more I learned about chiropractic and how the focus is on allowing the body to function as it
was intended by providing support to the structure, the more fascinated I became. Learning
about how the nervous system controls and coordinates everything in the body, and how
chiropractors work with the nervous system to help people to be healthy, it all made so much
sense to me that I felt compelled to move in that direction.
I started chiropractic school in my mid 30’s, a full 10 years older than most of my classmates. I
visited several chiropractic schools but immediately felt at home at Life University in Marietta,
GA. My education there was top notch. I not only focused on the regular curriculum, but I also
did extra coursework in pediatrics and sports chiropractic. I attended several clubs and tried to
share some life perspectives with my younger classmates. I organized a small group of
classmates to do a marathon in Atlanta and also participated as a representative of Life
University in the Ironman race in Louisville, KY. I look back on those 4 years as life-changing.
In practice I have also done many things. I have worked in my own practice, worked in other
practices, practiced various techniques, and even done house calls. Even with all of those
varied experiences, the constant has been the principles of chiropractic and the caring for, and
education of, people.
When I’m not caring for patients, I love to spend time with my wife and 3 kids. I enjoy being
outdoors, watching my son play soccer, and hanging out with friends.
