What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

ASD is a developmental disability associated with brain and neurological system differences. The exact cause of ASD is not known, but environmental factors and genetic conditions likely contribute to the disorder.

When a person has ASD, they often interact, communicate, learn and behave in different ways. The abilities of a person on the autism spectrum can vary based on where they are on the spectrum. Some people with ASD are entirely nonverbal, while others have advanced language and conversation skills. People with autism may be fully independent, need help performing daily tasks or fall somewhere in between.

What Are the Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder?

The signs and symptoms of autism spectrum disorder often begin before a person is 3 years old and last throughout their life. In some cases, symptoms can improve over time, especially when the individual receives care and support from an early age.

ASD symptoms typically fall into two categories — social and interaction challenges and restricted or repetitive behaviors. A person does not need to have every symptom to be on the autism spectrum.

Examples of social and interaction challenges include the child having difficulty making eye contact, not responding to their name by 9 months and not playing pretend by 48 months. Examples of repetitive behaviors include echolalia, or repetition of words and phrases, obsessive interests and hand flapping.

Physical symptoms can also be associated with ASD, including gastrointestinal issues, seizures and sleep disorders.

Chiropractic Care for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Chiropractic care can help manage some of the symptoms associated with ASD. Correcting misalignments in the spine works to improve neurological function and may ease some of the physical symptoms of ASD, such as constipation.
