Your child’s care plan for SPD likely includes a team of dedicated specialists, from occupational therapists to speech therapists. Each one is vital. But what if you could make all their hard work even more effective? Think of **chiropractic care for sensory processing disorder** as the foundation for all other therapies. When a child’s nervous system is stuck in a fight-or-flight state, it’s nearly impossible to learn new skills, often leading to what we see as behavioral challenges. A chiropractor works to calm that system, creating a more regulated state so your child can be more present and receptive in their other therapy sessions.
If you’ve ever felt that your child experiences the world more intensely than others, you’re not alone. Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a neurological condition where the brain has trouble receiving, organizing, and responding to information that comes in through the senses. Think of it like a traffic jam in the nervous system—the sensory signals get mixed up, leading to reactions that might seem out of proportion to the situation. It’s important to know that this isn’t a behavioral choice; it’s a genuine challenge in how your child’s brain and body are communicating.
This is a common and important question for parents. While Sensory Processing Disorder is widely recognized by occupational therapists and other specialists, it is not currently listed as a standalone diagnosis in the primary manual used by doctors, the DSM-V. This can be confusing, but it doesn’t make your child’s experience any less real. In fact, studies suggest that about 5 to 16 out of every 100 children in the U.S. live with SPD. The lack of an official label simply means we need to focus less on the diagnosis and more on the underlying cause—the miscommunication within the nervous system. At Lazar Spinal Care, we concentrate on identifying and addressing these neurological interferences to help your child’s brain and body work together more harmoniously, regardless of the official terminology.
Many parents notice similarities between SPD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and there's a good reason for that. Research shows that children with both conditions often have weaker connections in the parts of the brain that process sensory information, which explains the shared sensory sensitivities. However, the key difference lies elsewhere. The same brain studies found that only children with ASD had weaker connections in the brain areas responsible for social and emotional understanding. This helps clarify why challenges with social interaction are a core characteristic of autism, while they aren't typically the main issue for children with SPD alone. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for creating a targeted care plan that addresses your child's specific neurological needs.
The signs of SPD can look different for every child, but they often fall into two main categories: being over-responsive (hypersensitive) or under-responsive (hyposensitive) to sensory input. Your child might show an extreme reaction to something, or they might barely react at all.
Some common signs include:
Observing these signs is the first step toward understanding what your child is experiencing and exploring supportive care like pediatric chiropractic.
On the other side of the spectrum are children who are under-responsive, or hyposensitive. Instead of being overwhelmed by sensory information, their nervous systems don't register it as strongly. This can lead them to constantly seek out more intense sensory experiences just to feel "normal" and regulated. You might notice that your child seems to have an endless supply of energy, is always on the move, or engages in what looks like thrill-seeking behavior. They aren't trying to be difficult; their bodies are simply trying to get the input they need to understand where they are in space and feel grounded in their environment.
While it might look like your child is just being "boisterous," these behaviors can be signs that their sensory system is under-responsive. Some common examples include:
When a child’s nervous system is working overtime to make sense of the world, everyday activities can become overwhelming. A bustling classroom, a crowded grocery store, or even a family dinner can feel like a sensory assault. This can make it difficult for kids to focus in school, make friends, or follow simple routines without having a meltdown. These challenges are often mistaken for a child being "difficult" or "defiant," but they actually stem from a nervous system that is struggling to regulate itself. Understanding this can help you see their behavior not as an act of will, but as a call for help.
If you've ever felt bewildered because your child handled a busy environment perfectly one day, only to have a complete meltdown in the same situation the next, you're seeing a classic hallmark of SPD. This day-to-day fluctuation isn't random; it's directly tied to the state of their nervous system. Think of their nervous system as a communication highway. On some days, traffic flows smoothly. On others, stressors like poor sleep, new foods, or emotional upset can create a massive traffic jam. This internal "static" can be amplified by underlying interference, such as minor spinal misalignments that disrupt the brain's ability to process sensory information correctly. This is why addressing the root cause of nervous system dysregulation is so important for helping your child find more consistency and have more "good days." By ensuring the communication pathways are clear, we can help them become more resilient to the daily sensory challenges they face.
At its core, SPD is a problem within the nervous system. This incredible system, made up of the brain, spinal cord, and a network of nerves, is responsible for sending and interpreting messages from the environment. For a child with SPD, this communication system has static on the line. A key source of this interference can be misalignments in the spine, particularly at the top of the neck where the brainstem sits. These misalignments can disrupt the flow of information between the body and the brain, making it harder for the brain to process sensory input correctly and contributing to the many conditions we help address.
It’s natural to worry about your child’s future, but the long-term outlook for children with SPD is incredibly positive. While SPD isn’t something a child typically "grows out of," it is something they can learn to manage successfully. With the right support and strategies, children can thrive in school, build meaningful friendships, and grow into well-adjusted adults. The goal isn’t to eliminate their sensory sensitivities but to empower them with the tools and self-awareness to navigate a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming. This journey is about building resilience and understanding their unique nervous system.
A comprehensive care plan is the key to that success. This plan often includes occupational therapy to build practical skills and coping mechanisms. Think of pediatric chiropractic care as a foundational piece that supports all other therapies. Because SPD is rooted in the nervous system, gentle and specific adjustments can help calm and regulate that system. When your child’s body isn’t in a constant state of high alert, they become more receptive to the skills they’re learning in their other therapy sessions, making their hard work even more effective and paving the way for a brighter, more comfortable future.
When your child is struggling with sensory overload, you want a solution that gets to the root of the problem, not just one that masks the symptoms. Chiropractic care offers a gentle, drug-free way to support the nervous system, which is the master control system for processing sensory information. Since SPD is fundamentally a neurological issue, it makes sense to start there.
The goal of chiropractic isn't to "treat" SPD itself, but to address underlying spinal misalignments that can interfere with proper nerve function. By restoring balance to the nervous system, we can help a child’s brain and body communicate more effectively. This allows them to better interpret and adapt to the sensory information in their environment, leading to a calmer, more regulated state. Many parents find that this foundational support helps their child feel more comfortable in their own skin and better able to engage with the world.
Many therapies for SPD focus on managing behaviors and teaching coping skills, which are incredibly important. However, this can sometimes feel like you're only addressing the symptoms. Chiropractic care takes a different approach by asking, "Why is the nervous system so overwhelmed in the first place?" The answer often lies in tiny misalignments in the spine, especially at the top of the neck, that create interference in the communication between the brain and the body. By using gentle and precise chiropractic techniques, we can correct these misalignments, clearing the pathways so your child's brain can more accurately interpret their environment. This isn't about stopping a behavior; it's about restoring the body's natural ability to regulate itself from the inside out.
Think of your child's nervous system as a complex communication highway. When the spine is properly aligned, messages travel freely between the brain and the body. But even minor misalignments, often caused by birth trauma or childhood tumbles, can create interference—like static on a phone line. For a child with SPD, this static can scramble sensory signals, making it difficult for their brain to process information correctly. Chiropractic adjustments gently correct these spinal misalignments. This helps the nervous system work better, which can improve how the body handles sensory information and responds to the environment. Our specialized techniques are designed to be precise and gentle, making them ideal for children.
Because SPD stems from a challenge within the nervous system, it requires an approach that addresses the nervous system itself. Chiropractic care focuses on restoring that crucial brain-body connection. When the spine is aligned and the nerves are free from interference, the brain receives clearer, more accurate information from the body’s sensory receptors. This improved communication can help a child’s brain better organize and interpret sensory input, whether it’s the feeling of a shirt tag or the sound of a crowded room. By strengthening this fundamental connection, we support your child’s ability to process their world more effectively. This is a core focus of our pediatric chiropractic care.
Many children with SPD live in a constant state of "fight-or-flight," where their nervous system is on high alert. This makes them easily overwhelmed by sensory input that others might not even notice. Chiropractic care can help shift the nervous system out of this stressed state and into a more relaxed "rest-and-digest" mode. Gentle adjustments help calm the entire system, reducing tension and promoting a sense of well-being. As the nervous system becomes more balanced and regulated, children are often better able to manage sensory challenges, experience fewer meltdowns, and feel more at ease. This creates a positive foundation for them to thrive at home, at school, and during play.
Your child’s care plan for SPD likely includes a team of dedicated specialists, and that’s a great thing. A holistic approach doesn’t mean replacing these therapies; it means making them work better together. Think of chiropractic care as the foundational piece of your child's support team. By helping to calm and regulate their nervous system, it can make them more receptive to the skills they are learning in occupational, speech, or behavioral therapy. When the body’s communication pathways are clear, it’s easier for your child to process new information and make lasting progress. This collaborative strategy ensures that every effort made by you and their therapists has the best possible chance to succeed, addressing the many conditions that stem from nervous system dysregulation.
If you’re picturing the kind of adjustments you might see on adults, you can set that image aside. Chiropractic care for children, especially those with sensory sensitivities, is a completely different experience. It’s a calm, gentle, and highly personalized process designed to make your child feel safe and comfortable from the moment they walk in the door. The entire focus is on understanding their unique nervous system and identifying the root cause of their challenges before any adjustments are made. It’s about finding the source of the static so we can help their brain and body communicate more clearly.
Our approach to pediatric chiropractic is a partnership. We work with you and your child to create a supportive environment where they can thrive. The process begins with a comprehensive assessment to get a full picture of what’s going on. We don’t guess when it comes to your child’s health. Instead, we use objective measurements to see exactly how their nervous system is functioning. From there, we create a care plan that is tailored specifically to their needs, using gentle techniques that help their body heal and regulate itself. You can learn more about what to expect during your first visit on our New Patients page.
When we talk about chiropractic adjustments for kids, we’re not talking about any popping, twisting, or cracking. The techniques used are incredibly gentle, often involving no more pressure than you’d use to check the ripeness of a tomato. Chiropractic care offers a natural, holistic approach to helping children with sensory processing challenges. By focusing on spinal health, these gentle adjustments can help regulate the nervous system, potentially easing sensory processing issues.
The goal is to restore proper communication between the brain and the body without causing any stress. We understand that children with SPD can be particularly sensitive to touch, and our entire process is designed with that in mind. We use specific, low-force Our Techniques to make tiny corrections that have a big impact on nervous system function.
It’s completely understandable to worry that your child might be nervous about a chiropractic adjustment, but many parents are surprised to find their kids actually look forward to their visits. This is because the entire experience is designed to be positive and empowering. We create a calm, safe space where your child feels heard and respected. The adjustments themselves are incredibly gentle, and because they help regulate an overstimulated nervous system, they often bring an immediate sense of relief. For a child who is used to feeling overwhelmed, that feeling of calm can be deeply comforting.
Instead of a clinical or intimidating process, we focus on building trust and making the experience feel like a partnership. The relief that comes from a balanced nervous system is something kids can feel, even if they can't put it into words. This positive association helps them see their adjustments not as a procedure, but as something that helps them feel better in their own body. Our goal is to use specialized techniques that support their well-being, making each visit a step toward feeling more regulated, confident, and at ease in their world.
At Lazar Spinal Care, we specialize in a highly precise form of care that focuses on the upper cervical spine—the very top of the neck where the head and neck meet. This area is critical because it protects the brainstem, which acts as the main control center for the entire nervous system. Even a tiny misalignment here can interfere with the vital messages traveling between the brain and the body, contributing to the "traffic jams" that children with SPD experience.
For a child with sensory processing challenges, this precise and gentle method can make a world of difference. Our QSM3 technique is an advanced approach that allows us to correct these misalignments with an incredibly light touch, restoring balance to the nervous system without any forceful movements.
At Lazar Spinal Care, our entire process is designed to uncover the root cause of your child’s health challenges. We use advanced diagnostics to get a clear picture of what’s happening beneath the surface. Before we ever perform an adjustment, we use state-of-the-art tools like PostureIQ™ and Insight™ neurological scans. These scans are non-invasive and completely safe for children.
They allow us to see exactly where stress and interference are building up in your child’s nervous system. This data-driven approach means we aren’t guessing about your child’s care. We can pinpoint the precise areas that need support and track their progress objectively over time. This ensures the care plan we create is perfectly suited to your child’s needs from day one.
The thought of bringing your child to a new doctor’s office can be stressful, especially when you know they are sensitive to new environments, sounds, and touch. We understand that. That’s why our entire process is designed to be a calm, gentle, and highly personalized experience. From the moment you walk in, our goal is to make your child feel safe and comfortable. We take the time to connect with your child, explain what we’re doing in an age-appropriate way, and move at a pace that feels right for them. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach; it’s a partnership where we work with you and your child to create a supportive environment for healing.
When it comes to the adjustment itself, you can forget any ideas about popping or cracking. The techniques we use for children are incredibly gentle, often using no more pressure than you’d apply to check the ripeness of a tomato. We know that children with SPD can be particularly sensitive to touch, and our methods are specifically chosen to be non-invasive and reassuring. The goal is always to restore proper communication between the brain and the body without adding any stress to their system. We want your child to feel relaxed and at ease, allowing their nervous system to shift into a state of healing and regulation.
It’s the question every parent asks: will this actually help my child? When it comes to chiropractic care for Sensory Processing Disorder, the goal isn't to "cure" the condition but to address the underlying neurological stress that can make symptoms so much more intense. Think of your child's nervous system as a communication highway. When there are misalignments in the spine, especially at the top of the neck, it’s like having traffic jams and roadblocks on that highway. Messages between the brain and the body get scrambled, delayed, or exaggerated.
For a child with SPD, this internal chaos can turn everyday sensations into an overwhelming flood. A gentle touch might feel like a shove, or background noise might sound like a siren. By restoring proper alignment, chiropractic care helps clear those roadblocks. This allows the nervous system to function more efficiently, process information more accurately, and communicate without all the static. The result is often a calmer, more regulated system that can better handle the world's sensory input. It’s about creating an internal environment where your child can feel more comfortable and in control. Our approach to pediatric chiropractic care focuses on gently restoring this balance so your child can thrive.
Chiropractic adjustments work by correcting spinal misalignments, often called subluxations, that interfere with the nervous system's ability to do its job. These misalignments can create "roadblocks" that disrupt the flow of information between the brain and the body. For a child with SPD, this interference can heighten their sensitivity and keep their system in a constant state of high alert.
Gentle, specific adjustments help remove that interference. By restoring proper alignment, we help the nervous system communicate more clearly. This process can bring a sense of calm and balance to an overwhelmed system, improving the body's ability to process and respond to sensory information appropriately. Our specialized techniques are designed to be incredibly precise and gentle, making them a safe and effective way to support your child’s well-being.
When your child's nervous system is more balanced, you may start to see wonderful shifts in their daily life. Parents often report that their children begin to handle sensory input with greater ease. This might look like fewer meltdowns in noisy environments, a higher tolerance for different food textures, or less resistance to wearing certain types of clothing.
Beyond sensory challenges, you might notice improvements in emotional regulation, focus, and social interaction. Many parents see their children become more engaged and better able to manage their feelings at home and school. As the brain-body connection strengthens, you may also see gains in motor skills and coordination. You can read about the positive changes other families have experienced through our patient reviews.
If bedtime feels like a nightly battle and unpredictable mood swings are the norm, you’re not alone. These challenges are often rooted in a nervous system that’s stuck in a state of high alert. When a child is constantly in "fight-or-flight" mode, their body can’t easily transition into the calm "rest-and-digest" state needed for deep sleep and emotional regulation. Gentle chiropractic adjustments help calm this overactive system, reducing tension and promoting a sense of well-being. As their nervous system becomes more balanced, many parents notice significant improvements. This can mean longer, more restful sleep, fewer meltdowns, and a greater ability to manage feelings, which creates a more peaceful environment for the entire family. Our approach to pediatric chiropractic care is designed to provide this foundational support for your child's emotional and physical health.
One of the biggest concerns parents have is whether chiropractic care is safe for children. It’s a valid question, and the answer is a resounding yes—when performed by a chiropractor with specialized pediatric training. The adjustments used for children are incredibly gentle and precise, often involving no more pressure than you’d use to check the ripeness of a tomato.
Another myth is that chiropractic care is only for back pain. In reality, it’s about improving the function of the entire nervous system, which governs everything from sensory processing to immune response. Many chiropractors pursue extensive postgraduate training in pediatric care to provide the most specialized and effective treatments for children, helping with a wide range of conditions beyond just aches and pains.
Choosing a healthcare provider for your child is a big decision, especially when you’re looking for support for Sensory Processing Disorder. You want a partner in your child’s health—someone who listens, understands the nuances of SPD, and creates a safe, welcoming environment. When you start your search, focus on their specific experience with children, their understanding of sensory challenges, and their assessment process. Finding the right fit means you can feel confident that your child is in caring, capable hands.
Children aren't just miniature adults. Their spines and nervous systems are still developing, which means they need a completely different approach to care. That’s why it’s so important to find a chiropractor with postgraduate training and a focus on pediatric care. This specialized experience ensures they use gentle, specific techniques that are perfectly suited for a child’s body. A practitioner with this background knows how to make adjustments safe, comfortable, and effective for little ones, from infants to teens, and understands how to best support a growing body and mind.
Beyond general pediatric experience, you need a doctor who really gets Sensory Processing Disorder. A chiropractor who understands the neurological side of SPD can better connect how spinal alignment might be impacting your child’s sensory system. They’ll know that a child who is sensitive to touch or sound needs a different approach in the office. This understanding is key to building trust with your child and tailoring care to their specific needs. When a doctor is familiar with the challenges of SPD, they can more effectively identify the root cause of nervous system dysregulation.
A thorough assessment is the foundation of great care. Before you commit, ask what the initial evaluation looks like. A chiropractor focused on finding the root cause will want a detailed history, including information about your pregnancy and their birth. Don’t hesitate to ask questions like, “What does your new patient process involve?” or “What kind of diagnostic scans do you use?” This conversation will tell you a lot about their approach. You’re looking for a doctor who is a great listener and wants the full picture before starting care.
If your child has been diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder, you’ve likely already started exploring a team of specialists to support them. You might be wondering where chiropractic care fits into the picture. Think of it not as a replacement for other therapies, but as a foundational piece that can help all the other pieces work better. When your child’s nervous system is functioning more smoothly, they can get more out of their other treatments.
Chiropractic care is a powerful addition to therapies like occupational, speech, and behavioral therapy. It’s not meant to take their place, but to support and enhance the overall therapeutic approach. By addressing underlying interference in the nervous system, gentle adjustments can help create a state of calm and regulation in your child’s body. This makes it easier for them to engage, learn, and integrate the skills they’re developing in other sessions. At Lazar Spinal Care, we believe in a collaborative approach and are committed to working as part of your child’s dedicated care team to help them thrive.
Sensory integration therapy, typically led by an occupational therapist (OT), is often the primary treatment for children with SPD. This therapy uses play-based activities to help your child’s brain learn to process and react to sensory information in a more organized way. While this is a crucial part of your child’s care, chiropractic care can act as a powerful partner. It’s not meant to replace the incredible work your child does with their OT, but to support and enhance it. By addressing underlying interference in the nervous system, gentle adjustments can help create a state of calm and regulation in your child’s body, making them more receptive to the skills they are learning in their therapy sessions.
Creating a supportive environment at home can make a world of difference for a child with SPD. Simple changes can reduce sensory overload and help your child feel more secure. However, it’s important to remember that many children with SPD live in a constant state of "fight-or-flight," where their nervous system is on high alert. While home strategies can manage the external environment, chiropractic care can help address the internal one. By helping to shift the nervous system out of this stressed state and into a more relaxed "rest-and-digest" mode, we can help create a foundation of calm that makes these practical strategies even more effective. This two-pronged approach supports your child from the inside out.
If your child is easily overwhelmed by sensory input, the goal is to reduce the intensity of their environment. You can create a "calm-down corner" with soft pillows and blankets, provide noise-canceling headphones for loud places, and choose seamless, tagless clothing made from soft fabrics. Dimming the lights and sticking to a predictable routine can also help. These strategies reduce the external "static" your child experiences. Meanwhile, chiropractic care works on the internal static. When the spine is properly aligned, messages travel more freely between the brain and the body. By clearing this interference, we help your child’s nervous system process the world with greater ease, making them less susceptible to sensory overload.
For a child who is under-responsive, you’ll want to provide safe and appropriate ways for them to get the sensory input they crave. Activities like jumping on a mini-trampoline, using a weighted blanket, swinging, or doing "heavy work" like carrying groceries can be very regulating. Offering crunchy or chewy snacks can also satisfy their oral sensory needs. These activities help their brain register the input it’s missing. Chiropractic adjustments support this by correcting spinal misalignments that can create "roadblocks" in the nervous system. By helping to clear these pathways, we improve the flow of information between the brain and body, which can help their system better recognize and process sensory signals.
Many children with SPD work with an occupational therapist (OT) to learn strategies for managing sensory input and improving their ability to handle daily tasks. OT is fantastic for teaching kids valuable coping skills and new ways to interact with their environment. Chiropractic care can make that work even more effective.
By gently correcting spinal misalignments, we help clear up interference in the nervous system. This can improve the brain-body communication that is so crucial for sensory processing. When your child’s body is better able to process sensory information, the strategies they learn in OT can stick more easily. It’s a partnership: OT provides the tools, and our pediatric chiropractic care helps ensure the body’s internal wiring is ready to use them.
Does your child also see a speech or behavioral therapist? An overwhelmed nervous system can make it difficult for a child to focus, communicate their needs, or regulate their emotions—all things that are central to this type of therapy. If a child is in a constant state of fight-or-flight, it’s incredibly challenging for them to sit still, learn, and connect with their therapist.
This is where chiropractic care can provide essential support. By helping to calm the nervous system, gentle adjustments can make a child feel safer and more grounded in their own body. This calmer state can lead to better focus during sessions, improved emotional regulation, and a greater capacity for learning. We often hear from parents that their child seems more present and engaged in their other therapies after starting care with us.
We know that you are your child’s biggest advocate, and you’ve carefully assembled a team of professionals to help them. We want to be a seamless part of that team. A truly comprehensive treatment plan involves open communication and collaboration between all of your child’s healthcare providers. We believe that when everyone is on the same page, your child gets the best possible results.
We are always happy to connect with your child’s occupational therapist, speech therapist, pediatrician, or other specialists. By sharing insights and working toward common goals, we can create a supportive network that addresses your child’s needs from every angle. Our patient-focused approach means we see the whole picture, and we’re honored to work alongside other dedicated professionals to support your family’s wellness journey.
Taking the first step toward any new therapy for your child can feel like a big deal, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. When you find the right partner in your child's health, the process can feel supportive and hopeful from the very beginning. Knowing what to expect can help ease any anxiety for both you and your child, making the first visit a positive and productive experience. Here’s a simple guide to help you get started with chiropractic care for SPD.
New environments can be a lot for a child with SPD to handle, so a little preparation goes a long way. You can start by talking about the visit in a calm and positive way. Explain that you’re going to see a doctor who helps kids feel more comfortable in their bodies. You can even describe it as a "body check-up." It’s also a great idea to bring a favorite toy, book, or comfort item to help your child feel secure. Our team at Lazar Spinal Care is experienced in creating a welcoming space for all children, and we understand the importance of patience and gentleness in pediatric chiropractic care. We’ll go at your child’s pace, ensuring they feel safe and respected throughout their visit.
Your first appointment is all about getting to know you and your child. We’ll start with a detailed conversation about your child’s health history, including their birth story and any developmental milestones. This helps us understand the complete picture. We use gentle, non-invasive diagnostic tools like our Insight™ neurological scans to see exactly how your child’s nervous system is functioning. This technology gives us a clear map of where stress is being held in their body without any guesswork. The entire process is designed to be comfortable for kids. We’ll explain everything we’re doing, ensuring both you and your child understand what’s happening. Our goal is to find the root cause of their challenges so we can provide the most effective care.
Feeling confident in your child’s care team is essential. During your consultation, don’t hesitate to ask questions. This is your opportunity to make sure our clinic is the right fit for your family.
Here are a few questions you might consider asking:
We believe in clear communication and will provide you with a detailed report of our findings and a recommended treatment plan. We want you to feel fully informed and empowered every step of the way. When you’re ready, you can request an appointment to get started.
Is chiropractic care safe for a child with sensory sensitivities? Absolutely. Safety is the most important thing, and pediatric chiropractic care is designed to be incredibly gentle. The techniques we use for children are completely different from those used for adults. They involve very light, specific contacts to help the nervous system function better without causing any stress. We are always mindful of a child's unique sensory needs and work at their pace to ensure they feel secure and comfortable throughout the entire process.
How is this different from what my child does in occupational therapy? That's a great question. Think of it this way: occupational therapy (OT) gives your child the tools and strategies to manage their sensory world from the outside in. Chiropractic care works from the inside out. Our focus is on improving the function of the nervous system itself by addressing spinal misalignments that can interfere with brain-body communication. When the nervous system is calmer and more organized, your child is often better able to use the wonderful skills they learn in OT. The two therapies work together beautifully.
Will the adjustments hurt my child? Not at all. The idea of an "adjustment" can sound intimidating, but for children, it's a very gentle process. We don't use any of the popping or twisting you might associate with chiropractic care. The amount of pressure used is often no more than what you'd use to check the ripeness of a tomato. Our goal is to make the experience calm and reassuring, helping your child's body relax and heal.
How long will it take to see changes in my child? Every child's nervous system is unique, so the timeline for progress varies. Some parents notice subtle shifts in their child's mood, sleep, or calmness after just a few visits. For others, the changes are more gradual and build over time. Our goal is to address the root cause of the interference, which allows the body to heal at its own pace. We track progress using objective scans so we can see the functional improvements as they happen.
Can you explain the connection between the spine and sensory issues again? Of course. Your child's brain and body are in constant communication through the nervous system, and the spine is the main highway for these messages. If there are misalignments in the spine, especially at the very top of the neck, it can create static or interference on that highway. For a child with SPD, this static can scramble sensory information, making everyday sights, sounds, and textures feel overwhelming. By gently correcting these misalignments, we help clear the static so the brain can receive and process information more clearly.
